Caring for Your Pet as They Age
Watching your pet grow older is one of the most bittersweet parts of being a pet owner. They may slow down a little, sleep more, or not jump around the way they used to. But getting older doesn't have to mean feeling bad. With the right care, your senior pet can still enjoy a happy, comfortable life — and that's exactly what we're here to help with.
At Suffield Veterinary Hospital, we love older pets just as much as the young ones. Our team understands the special needs that come with age, and we take the time to make sure every senior patient gets the attention and care they deserve.
Our Senior Pet Care Services
- Blood Work and Lab Testing: Routine blood tests are one of the best tools we have for catching health problems early in older pets. These tests can show us how the kidneys and liver are functioning, check blood sugar levels, look for thyroid issues, and more — often before any outward signs appear.
- Pain Management: Arthritis and joint pain are very common in older dogs and cats. Many pets quietly live with discomfort without showing obvious signs. We can help identify if your pet is in pain and work with you on a plan to keep them more comfortable, whether that's through medication, lifestyle changes, or other options.
- Dental Care: Dental problems tend to build up over the years. Bad teeth can cause real pain and can even affect your pet's heart and kidneys. We offer dental exams and cleanings to keep your senior pet's mouth healthy.
- Weight and Nutrition Guidance: Weight can be tricky as pets age — some gain too much, while others lose weight unexpectedly. We'll help you figure out the right diet and portion sizes for your older pet so they stay at a healthy weight and get the nutrients they need.
- Vaccinations: Just because your pet is older doesn't mean they don't need vaccines. We'll review which vaccines make sense for your senior pet's lifestyle and health status and make sure they stay protected.
- Monitoring Chronic Conditions: If your pet has already been diagnosed with a long-term health condition, we'll work with you to manage it over time. We'll check in regularly, adjust medications as needed, and make sure your pet stays as healthy and comfortable as possible.
Signs Your Senior Pet May Need a Checkup
- Moving more slowly than usual or having trouble getting up
- Drinking more water or urinating more often
- Changes in appetite or unexplained weight loss or gain
- Bad breath or trouble chewing
- Lumps, bumps, or changes in the skin
- Confusion, restlessness, or changes in sleep patterns
- Coughing or breathing changes
Why Senior Pets Need Special Care
Pets age faster than people do, and different animals reach their senior years at different times. Generally, dogs are considered senior around age 7, though larger breeds may reach that stage a bit earlier. Cats usually enter their senior years around age 10 or 11.
As pets get older, their bodies change. Their immune system isn't as strong, their joints can get stiff, their teeth may need more attention, and they can develop health conditions that weren't there before — like diabetes, kidney disease, thyroid problems, or heart issues.
The good news is that many of these problems can be caught early with regular checkups. Finding something early gives us a much better chance of treating it successfully and keeping your pet comfortable.
